I'm not smart enough to use a fancy camera with interchangeable lenses. Mine is a two-year-old point and shoot, a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 with 12x optical zoom. I think I paid a little over $200 for it back in the fall of 2007.
I also use Google's free photo editing software Picasa (free download at http://picasa.google.com/). It's nothing like Photoshop, but it's great for cropping, straightening and adjusting some of the light effects. You have to get pretty close with the original photo, but Picasa can make a good shot look great.
by the way, what kind of camera/lens combo do you have? been meaning to ask.
