Ice, Ice Baby

According to the locals, this frigid weather is more typical of January than December.  The normal Sula winter has long periods of days with lows in the low teens and highs in the thirties, punctuated by five or six arctic storms per year.  Since this is an El Nino year, there should be fewer arctic storms and below-average snowfall.

It was 24 below this morning, but it's a sunny plus 2 now.

The river is mostly frozen, with only a few holes here and there.  The ever-present roar of the river is reduced to a few small trickles.  The silence is deafening.

The ice is quite thick in places.  A neighbor told me it will get thick enough to walk on.  It appears there will always be thinner spots, though.  Good thing the river isn't deep.

  1. I wish I would have had my camera this morning. I could have sent you pictures of the frozen ditch water along the side of the road. It's 24 degrees here. Not as beautiful as your river pictures...but it's frozen water! (My kids would call it worm water...that's what you find in ditches!)
